Yr 7 Basketball 2014/15 Season Report (Girls & Boys)

Year 7 basketball was a popular club this year with 30-40 year 7’s attending each week.

The year 7 girls had 3 successful tournaments with 3 teams representing at each event. The A team showed huge amounts of skill and won the majority of their games. The B and C teams showcased excellent decision making and teamwork aiding them in their success. The girls showed huge improvement throughout the 6 weeks of basketball and should do really well next year in year 8 when the tournaments will progress further.

The Year 7 boys showed huge commitment and talent in basketball. Three teams were entered into every tournament with the A team being undefeated in each tournament- Well done boys, a huge success! The B and C boy’s teams only lost a handful of games and displayed great teamwork and skills. The boys will do fantastic next year when they will be able to progress further in their tournaments.

Yr 8 Basketball 2014/15 Season Report (Girls & Boys)

A successful Basketball season began with over 50 students attending lunchtime and after school practises. The hard work and commitment continued throughout the season, with huge improvements evident in training and game play for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. We were able to enter 3 teams into each CVL tournament, with at least 1 team coming top of their pool each time.

After showcasing some of the best Basketball I had seen all year, both the girls’ and boys’ teams reached the final of the qualifier CVL tournament - both occasions being their first experience of 5v5 full court Basketball.

The girls’ took on Castle in their final and were forced to adapt their game - which they did amazingly well - playing better than any 3v3 game so far, and were unfortunate to finish with a loss of 18-14.

The boys’ team faced Haygrove in their final; they rose to the challenge and could not have fought any harder for the district champions’ title, demonstrating some amazing team Basketball. After a gripping 20 minutes, the game finished 15-14 in Haygrove’s favour. It was outstanding to see the progress all teams had made, and the awesome teamwork, determination and sporting prowess on show.

I am very proud to have been a part of such a successful season and, with the potential they have all shown, I am very excited to see what next year may bring!

Year 9 Boys Basketball

Year 9 boys basketball team have been outstanding this season becoming County Champions! The whole team has developed into a strong attacking force with fast breaks and lay up shots proving too much to handle from opposition teams. A special mention must go to Ian Adams and Dominic DVD who scored a high percentage of points and blew away defences with their athleticism and accuracy.

As the season progressed, the boys worked hard on defence using a strong half-court defence strategy which proved difficult for teams to break down. The stand out match of the season was away to Churston Ferrers Grammar School, after the 1 hour 45 minute drive to Devon the boys played an excellent game of Basketball outscoring their opponents in each quarter and comfortably winning the match.

The boys came unstuck in the next round of the national cup against a very experienced team from Bristol.

This team has an extremely bright future ahead of them with many exciting matches and cup runs to come! Well done to everyone involved!

Year 10 Girls Basketball

Year 10 Girls made fantastic progress this year becoming County Champions at U15 and losing in SW final. They continue their progress to become a more attacking threat against the local teams where they easily topped the league winning against Taunton Academy, Courtfields and Castle.

It is more unfortunate, as the lack of other area basketball means a win at the Somerset Championships did not prepare them for the SW final against The Maynard School, Exeter. They outscored us in the final with superior shooting but defensively we held our own stopping all drives.

A fantastic improvement from last year where we came second in the local league.

Year 10 Boys Basketball

Year 10 boys continue to show a level of play in the local area that most schools cannot compete with. We were easy local winners with a massive points difference to Taunton Academy, Castle and Haygrove.

The Somerset final back in February could have been a different story with a confident Huish Episcopi team who came to play. After a quarter where we allowed ourselves to get behind by 20 points but came through eventual winners 58-49. This led to a meet again in the SW final against Churston Ferrers for the 3rd year running. With luck deserting us for the afternoon we lost 66-42.

The lads can be proud of their achievements, as they are all Heathfield made and do not play outside of school.

Year 11 Girls Basketball

The year 11 girls finished off their time at Heathfield with an amazing start to the season and were scoring at will. Supporting our amazing GB star “Poppy Williams” the girls rallied to comfortable winners of the Somerset Championships. Only losing one game by 2 points in a controversial timing error to Uffculme.

The lack of opposition and massive period of time from the final to the next round of the national regional rounds let our level of play drop. We played Uffculme again in the SW triangle and lost by 10 point chasing the game from the beginning. The only consolation was 4 three points in a row for Poppy.

We still have Backwell to play and hope to leave with a win.

Year 11 Boys Basketball

Year 11 boys made great progress in scoring and playing ability. They had a confidence in play that made them competitive in every game. They managed to close the gap on most teams in the league but were unsuccessful in improving their league position from last year.
