Drama

Our philosophy is simple: to give every student rich imaginative experiences; to help them gain self-confidence, self-knowledge and understanding of others (the priceless gift of empathy). We also aim to prove that hard work can be the best fun ever.

Key Stage 4 Drama and Performing Arts.

Drama at KS4 is taken with the exam board Rock school Limited (RSL) which is a vocational course. RSL Level 2 Certificate in Creative & Performing Arts specification. This two year course will consist of two units which are the following:

Unit 212: Performing Text

This internally assessed unit sees the students exploring two contrasting texts and exercises designed to develop their acting skills, one being Shakespeare ( Classic) and one being a contemporary play which will become the student's full length play to the community. It culminates in an assessed performance and a performance in the Tacchi Morris Theatre.

Unit 101: Live Performance

This unit is an externally exam, set by the exam board each year. The aim of this unit is to give learners the opportunity to explore all the skills required for a live performance. These range from planning, rehearsing and the performance itself to the reflection required post-performance to ensure continual development as performers. By undergoing the process of preparing for a live performance, learners will have the opportunity to experience the variety of activities and skills required to bring a performance together.

Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)

This course involves all three disciples: acting, singing and dancing which is done through BTEC.

Component one:

Is an analysis of three musicals which is created into coursework, these lessons are a mix of theory and practical.

Component two:

Is learning existing repertoire from a selection of musicals and analysing it practically to put on stage for a performance in the Tacchi Morris Theatre.

Component three:

This unit is an externally exam, set by the exam board each year. The aim of this unit is to give learners the opportunity to explore all the skills required for a live performance. These range from planning, rehearsing and the performance itself to the reflection required post-performance to ensure continual development as performers. By undergoing the process of preparing for a live performance, learners will have the opportunity to experience the variety of activities and skills required to bring a performance together using musical theatre extracts and performing to a brief.

The BTEC course is extremely practical and also demanding in terms of written logbook evidence from each student. It models the real-life process of learning to become an actor and equips learners with an excellent range of transferable skills: self-confidence, self-presentation, clear communication, team work and accountability, working towards real-life deadlines.

“Achieving this play has made me realise that I can do many things if I put my mind to it and there is no such thing as ‘I can’t’. I feel that I have improved on many different performing/acting skills. I really am truly proud of our group and what we have just achieved.”

Drama in education is all about what if? : building models of the world and then exploring and testing them, in collaboration with others. Everyone has a voice, it’s being able to find it and have a safe, creative space plus the tools to express it. Every student in Years 7, 8 and 9 has one drama lesson per week, where we explore a wide range of themes, issues, characters and drama styles (see KS3 subject programme below).

“If I could, I would do it all again. I’m so glad I took Drama because it made me feel more confident as a person. It was worth every single second that we put towards the play. I will miss working with the group”.
