Learning Support

Welcome to the Learning Support department. Our small team of LSAs works closely with students who have a statement of special educational need; an education, health and care plan (EHCP) or a very significant degree of need (approximately 2% of the school population). The SENCO, Mrs Taylor, leads the team and shares information with teachers about the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) of students on the SEND register. The needs of students at SEN support (approximately12% of the school population) are largely met through high quality teaching, differentiated for individual students and a strong pastoral (form tutor/head of year) network.

What do we do?

Our team has experience of supporting students who have difficulties in one or more of the following areas:

  • Cognition and Learning
  • Communication and Interaction
  • Social Emotional and Mental Health
  • Physical and/or Sensory

A Learning Support assistant (LSA) usually supports students with the most severe degree of difficulty in class.

Interventions

A small number of students may attend one or more of the following short-term interventions:

  • Individual Literacy Intervention
  • Emotional Literacy
  • Language comprehension
  • Nurture group
  • Social communication skills
Mentoring

We offer 1:1 mentoring to some students. The student works with a mentor for 15 minutes each week to overcome barriers to learning. These might include:

  • Literacy
  • Managing behaviour and/or emotions
  • Organisation
  • Revision
IT

We offer Alphasmarts (KS3) or laptops (KS4) to some students whose handwriting is very slow or difficult to read.

Read and Write (Texthelp) is available to all students and staff.

Exam access arrangements

We liaise with exam boards to ensure that exam access arrangements (eg: extra time, scribe, word processor) are in place for GCSE exams.

External Agencies

We work with Local Authority advisory teachers and a range of external agencies, including the Educational Psychology service.
