Children's Play, Learning and Development

BTEC First in Children’s Play, Learning, and Development at Key Stage 4

The BTEC First in Children’s Play, Learning, and Development is a two year course studied as an option in years 10 and 11.

The course is made up of three units of work which cover a variety of theory topics about how children develop, and how the adults around them help them reach key milestones as they grow up.

  • Unit 1 is an externally assessed unit (1 hour exam in year 10) and is about patterns of child development.
  • Unit 2 is internally assessed (three pieces of coursework) and covers how children develop through play.
  • Unit 3 is also internally assessed (three pieces of coursework) and covers early years principles.

During the course students will learn a variety of things about children in their early years including, key milestones for each area of development, factors affecting growth and development (including the impact of transitions), how children play, and how adults support and structure play, as well as how key adults include and empower children.

Taking this option builds a good foundation that supports studying level 3 at further education level (and similar courses) as well as pursuing careers in care, teaching, leadership, and many more.
