High Prior Attainers

AT HEATHFIELD COMMUNITY SCHOOL WE AIM TO HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS OF ALL STUDENTS ALL OF THE TIME, BY ENCOURAGING AND SUPPORTING THE LEARNING OF ALL STUDENTS. THE BEST PRACTICE FOR HIGH PRIOR ATTAINING STUDENTS (HPA) IS THE BEST PRACTICE FOR ALL STUDENTS. THE BEST PROVISION FOR HPA STUDENTS IS ONE THAT CHALLENGES THEM AND EXTENDS THEIR KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND THINKING, PROVIDING AN ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH ALL STUDENTS ARE ENABLED TO THINK DEEPLY AND ENGAGE WITH HEALTHY STRUGGLE. THIS IN TURN PROVIDES A STIMULATING LEARNING ENVIROMENT AND WHEN STRUCTURED TO THE APPROPRIATE LEVEL WILL IMPACT ON STANDARDS OVERALL.

At Heathfield Community School we believe that students with particular abilities and talents must be recognised and supported to be stretched. Offering opportunities for students to shine and develop a passion for learning in all areas. Through our High Prior Attaining policy we aim to achieve a whole school ethos where achieving at a high level is an expectation, by implementing effective identification and monitoring of the High Prior Attaining students on the basis of their academic abilities and potential.

All students at Heathfield are offered opportunities to ‘Take it Further’ both in and outside of lessons. This may take many forms, including higher level questioning, additional activities or an alternative approach. It is a hope that High Attainers will actively engage in such opportunities and take responsibility for extending their learning.

At Heathfield, we have a tailored Aspire Programme which focuses on developing the skills and aspirations of our high attaining students. To begin with HPA students will be offered the opportunity to take part in the Heathfield Aspire Challenge Programme. We will support all HPA students as much as they want us to, but the emphasise will be on the fact that the challenges require motivation, self-discipline, and enthusiasm. The aim of the challenge programme is for students to work independently to challenge themselves. The Aspire Challenge Programme is comprised of a number of challenges which aim to stretch, challenge, engage and motivate our students in a wide range of skills and subjects. There is no limit to the number of challenges a student can undertake and achieve.

The purpose of the Heathfield Aspire Challenge Programme is to prepare students for a world beyond school – achieving potential means taking risks, not fearing failure and being able to motivate oneself.

The Heathfield Aspire Workshop Programme will include skills workshops which will provide students with the skills and mind-sets to raise aspirations and improve performance: Motivation Workshop (what they want to achieve in life), Mind Mapping Workshop (planning skills, life long learning skills), Resilience Workshop (bounce back and adaption). They will also have a chance to visit a University. The aim is to encourage student achievement by raising students’ awareness of University and allowing them to learn about the benefits of higher education. Addressing any misconceptions students may have about higher education and attempt to overcome perceived barriers to entering University. Providing information relating to Universities in general, why people go to University and how decisions they make at this stage of their education will impact their future, as well as giving an insight into student life.

The purpose of the Heathfield Aspire Workshop Programme is to raise the aspirations and motivation of students, whilst providing students with the skills to improve performance.

The Heathfield Aspire Mentoring Programme, will be in place for all HPA students. All students will be identified and monitored closely. Any individual needs will be addressed, and support offered.
